TRAINING

"I feel that Training should not be used to try and "fix a person" wrongfully placed in a specific post but rather develop employees and allow them to gain additional skills."

How can organisations benefit from Training?

People are the intellectual capital of an organisation and therefore training personnel is a wise business investment. Without capable personnel, there will be no organisational growth. In developing life skills, people will feel more confident, make better decisions and manage stress better. This will ultimately lead to better performance, less personnel turnover and higher productivity.

What Training do I offer?

My focus is on developing life skills. All the workshops have been developed after years of practical hands-on experience in the field and provide easy to use tips for everyday life.

Workshops can be presented either accredited or non-accredited (this can form part of Employee Wellness). I have got an agreement with a SAQA Accredited service provider to present accredited workshops.

Some of my workshops includes:

  • Time Management
  • Stress Management
  • Conflict Management
  • Problem Solving and Decision-making
  • Trauma Debriefing (for non-Psychologists)
  • Surviving Crime (Hostage Survival and Anti-hijacking)

Training experience

My Training experience includes the following:

  • I have designed, coordinated and presented various workshops/training courses in the field of Psychology over the years; including Organisational Development, practical facilitation, interviewing skills, presentation skills, trauma debriefing, etc.
  • I have developed and presented various life skills workshops for clients, including stress management, time management and conflict management to name the most popular ones.
  • All assessments for the above two points were done in either a formal or informal way, which included practical assignments that had to be completed over a period of time, presentations by learners, role-play exercises, case studies, written assignments and self-assessments.
  • I have developed course material based on SAQA unit standards (hand-outs, work books, facilitator guides and assessment guides) as well as non-accredited course material according to specific needs for clients.
  • I have developed case studies, role-play exercises, skills tests and written assignments in order to assess students.
  • I have developed and presented a Trauma Debriefing training seminar for the Third American Air Force in a joint exercise between the SANDF and the Americans.
  • I have developed and presented Anti-hijacking training for the Swedish Air Force as part of an orientation programme for members of the Air Force and their families working on a project within South Africa.
  • I have lectured at the University of Pretoria for the Honours and Masters degree Psychology students (team development, assessment, trauma debriefing, etc.).
  • I am facilitating life skills workshops for CE at UP (Continuous Education at the University of Pretoria). Formative assessments are done by using self-assessments and group discussions. After the contact session learners are given a written assignment as part of their summative assessment.
  • I am an external examiner for the University of South Africa in the subjects of Labour Relations and Human Resource Management. I am responsible for marking assignments as well as examination scripts (memorandums provided by UNISA).
  • I am an occasional guest speaker on conferences – topics are mostly about life skills (e.g. conflict and stress management).
  • I have chaired meetings between clients and trainers/facilitators in order to determine training/development needs as well as to manage all logistical arrangements regarding the training/development sessions.
  • I have facilitated practical Leadership development workshops for Telkom SA. These are 5 day workshops where middle managers are given practical skills in dealing with day to day managerial tasks, e.g. dealing with conflict, dealing with a dissatisfied employee, dealing with change, etc. For each topic learners have to evaluate a video session where after they have to do a practical role-play to demonstrate their skills in dealing with the issue at hand. They are being recorded where after the video is played back and their performance is discussed (by themselves and their peers) and they are then coached by myself to demonstrate the correct behaviour.
